"It’s worth noting that the 1989 fiscal year was the all-time high for road resurfacing. That year saw 319 miles of “lane miles” resurfaced—a lane mile being a stretch a mile long and 10 feet wide. But that figure plummeted until it reached an all-time low of 35 miles in 2000, coinciding with the peak of the previous administration’s vision program. Like our sewers, and just about everything else in City government, we need to play catch-up."

ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- Filled more than 176,000 potholes
- Resurfaced 111 lane miles
- Spent $124 million on road rehabilitation since 2005
- Committing $77 million in fiscal year 2009
- Improving pedestrian safety by repainting crosswalks, installing countdown traffic signals, and piloting imbedded flashing signals at mid-block crosswalks in two locations
- Reconstructed or repaved King Street in Moiliili, Piikoi, Waimano Home Road and streets in Aina Haina, Kailua, Waipahu, Mililani and elsewhere
- Projects underway or near completion include South Beretania, Keeaumoku, University, South, Alewa, and streets in Manoa, Waipio and Pearl City
- Projects to begin soon on North King, Kilauea, Kaamilo, Lusitana, Kapolei Parkway, and roads in Kailua
- Repaving scheduled for 2008 includes California Avenue and streets in Waipio, Manana, Pearl City, Moanalua, Kalihi Valley and Nuuanu
- Makakilo Second Access Road environmental assessment underway
- Renovated Anahulu (Rainbow) Bridge in Haleiwa
