Oahu & Maui Events Feature Martin Nievera, Pops Fernandez & Local Entertainers

martin and popsYesterday on Maui and today on Oahu, droves of people attended an “All-Star Extravaganza” to show their support for Mufi Hannemann in his bid to be Hawaii’s next governor. The events were an opportunity for supporters to donate to the Hannemann campaign and enjoy great music and local entertainment.  Both of the “All-Star Extravaganza” events featured Hannemann supporters Martin Nievera and Pops Fernandez, popularly known as the concert King and Queen of the Philippines.

Yesterday’s event, which took place at the Maui Tropical Plantation in Wailuku, featured Nievera and Fernandez and local comedian Augie T. Mufi Hannemann took the stage and spoke to the crowd, which was standing room only, before joining Nievera and Fernandez for a song.

“Since announcing my candidacy for governor in May, the support from the Filipino community, in particular, has been overwhelming,” said Hannemann.  “Martin and Pops are revered by so many in the Philippines and I am honored to have their support.  It’s a rare opportunity to have an act of this caliber come to the islands and I know many will remember this for years to come.”

Tonight, at the Farrington High School Auditorium, Nievera and Fernandez again took the stage and gave a memorable performance. A Touch of Gold and local break dancing group 808 Breakers, rounded out the entertainment.  Hannemann also joined Nievera on stage for a musical number.  Nievera ended the night with a song he wrote for Mufi, "Stand Tall. Stand Proud."  The crowd of more than 1,000 gave them a standing ovation.

Mufi Hannemann has long been a supporter of Hawaii's Filipino community, and has worked hard to maintain strong ties between Hawaii and the Philippines. In 2009, the United Filipino Council of Hawaii bestowed Hannemann with the Ating Kaibigan award, which means “our Filipino friend.”  It is the most prestigious award granted to a non-Filipino for contributions to the community."  Out of the three anticipated candidates for governor, Hannemann is the only one who has visited the Philippines,” said Theresia McMurdo, member of the Hannemann Committee. “He has made five trips there and is endeared by Filipinos, both at home and abroad.”

About Filipinos for Mufi

Mufi Hannemann has long been a supporter of Hawaii's Filipino community, and has worked hard to maintain strong ties between our islands and the Philippines. Mayor Hannemann recently led the 21st annual Trade Mission to the Philippines, sponsored by the Filipino Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, and was bestowed the prestigious honor of being an "Adopted Son of Ilocos Norte." During his most recent trip in November 2009, he traveled across the Ilocos region with members of his cabinet of Filipino ancestry and Hawaii delegates, visiting Laoag, Pasuquin, Batac, Bacarra, Badoc and San Nicolas, as well as Pasig, Metro Manila and Cebu. He was adopted as an honorary citizen of the towns of Vigan, Bacarra, Manila, Pasuquin and San Nicolas.

"Out of the three anticipated major candidates for governor, Hannemann is the only one who has visited the Philippines.  He has made five trips there and is endeared by the Filipinos at home and abroad,” said Theresia McMurdo, a member of the statewide exploratory committee urging Mufi Hannemann to throw his hat in the ring for the state leadership position.

Filipino businessman and community leader Eddie Flores said, “Mufi is the most qualified to be our next governor because of his vision, strong leadership, and exceptional record in keeping Honolulu afloat during one of the worst economic times in history."  Flores added, “We are confident that he will lead Hawaii well and turn our state woes around."
